frontelevThe Bucks are a family of five who have been struggling for the past six years to rebuild their home in Tugun, South East Queensland. Sandra and Danny Buck live with their daughters, Jessica and Jaimie, and niece, Kerry. Sandra, Jessica, Jaimie and Kerry all have Myotonic muscular dystrophy, leaving Danny with the round-the-clock job of caring for everyone. Only being able to work part-time, Danny has no way of raising the funds required to rebuild their home.

Their current home is cramped, draughty and riddled with asbestos, leaky rooves and poor wiring. For the Bucks, it is the winter cold that poses the greatest threat. Due to the nature of Myotonic MD, all the girls have reduced lung function making them more susceptible to life threatening lung infections. Consequently the family face each on-coming winter with dread.

Initially the family approached groups in their local community for assistance, but the project was too large for any one group to take on. However a number wanted to help and with a little thinking outside the square, the Buck House Building Project Support Group was formed.

Our aim is to raise awareness in the local community of the family’s plight, to coordinate the donation of goods, services, labour and direct funding that will contribute to building the family a safe, suitable new home and to make life more comfortable for the family.

Demolition News
Although the family would have preferred to use a large stick of dynamite, a small box of matches and a good throwing arm, more conventional demolition methods have begun and the old Buck House will be completely demolished by mid-July 08.
